Nestled deep in the mountains lies Shirakawa-go, a quiet and peaceful village where the nostalgic, original landscape of Japan unfolds.

Shirakawago is a historic village of Gassho-zukuri farmhouses located in Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features beautiful scenery often described as the original landscape of Japan, and approximately 500 residents still live their daily lives here today.

The moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in a mysterious sense of excitement—as if time had stood still here for hundreds of years.
 

The most distinctive feature of Shirakawa-go is, without a doubt, its uniquely shaped “gassho-zukuri” village, which stands quietly nestled in a mountainous region known for heavy snowfall.
 

Shirakawa-go is one of the snowiest places in Japan, with snow often reaching over two meters deep in winter.

To keep the houses from collapsing under the heavy snow, the roofs were built at a steep 60-degree angle, resembling hands pressed together in prayer (Gassho). This shape lets the snow naturally slide right off.

Believe it or not, these massive structures were built without using a single nail!

Instead, the wooden beams are bound tightly together using flexible ropes and vines called "neso." This clever design gives the house flexibility, allowing it to sway and safely absorb the shocks of heavy mountain winds and earthquakes.
